Braga
Braga is one of Portugal's oldest cities and its religious capital. The Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary — a Baroque staircase climbing a hill outside town with a pilgrimage church at the top — is genuinely spectacular and rarely crowded with international visitors. The city centre has good cafes, a strong local food culture, and a university that keeps it young and energised. Porto is an hour away by train.
