Fresh Air › Instead of Marrakech
Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen's blue-painted medina tumbles down a hillside in the Rif Mountains with a relaxed pace and aesthetic coherence unlike anywhere else in Morocco. The Andalusian refugees who founded the city in the 15th century painted it white; the blue came later. The surrounding Rif Mountains offer good hiking and the city has a tolerant, slow-paced character that contrasts with Marrakech's intensity. Social media has significantly increased visitor numbers, but the medina is large enough to absorb them except at the most photogenic spots.
Why visit
A mountain medina painted in shades of blue, backed by the Rif Mountains, with good hiking in the surrounding hills.
Crowd level
Instagram has increased visitor numbers significantly. Still far calmer than Marrakech. Early mornings in the medina are genuinely quiet.
Best time
April to June and September to October
Getting there
Bus from Fes (4hrs), Tangier (3hrs), or Casablanca. No direct international connections.
Tradeoffs
The blue paint is partly a tourism construct. Instagram tourism has created some overcrowding at photogenic spots. Limited sights beyond wandering.
