Fresh Air › Instead of Marrakech
Essaouira
Essaouira sits on a promontory on Morocco's Atlantic coast, enclosed by 18th-century Portuguese ramparts. The constant wind that batters the coast also keeps temperatures moderate and crowds thin. The medina is compact and well-preserved, with a working fishing port that supplies the restaurants lining the harbour. The Gnawa music tradition is strongest here and the city has been attracting artists for decades, giving it a creative character that Marrakech's tourism economy has smoothed away.
Why visit
A walled Atlantic port city with blue-white architecture, working fishing harbour, Gnawa music tradition, and excellent seafood.
Crowd level
Popular but manageable. Day trips from Marrakech bring some crowds; overnight visitors get a much calmer experience.
Best time
April to June and September to October
Getting there
Bus from Marrakech (3hrs) or Agadir. Small airport with some connections.
Tradeoffs
Strong winds year-round make beach swimming less pleasant than expected. Smaller than Marrakech with fewer major sights.
