Florianopolis
Florianopolis is the capital of Santa Catarina state — an island connected to the mainland by two bridges with a topography that packs 42 beaches, dunes, lagoons, Atlantic Forest reserves, and colonial fishing villages into a manageable area. The surf scene here is among the best in South America. The oyster farming in the northern lagoons produces some of the finest oysters in Brazil, served directly from producers at minimal cost. The city draws Brazilian and Argentine visitors in enormous numbers in summer but almost no international tourism.
Why visit
A subtropical island city with over 40 beaches, surf culture, dunes, lagoons, and a Santa Catarina gastronomic tradition (oysters, German-influenced food) entirely unfamiliar to most international visitors.
Crowd level
Extremely popular with Brazilian and Argentine holidaymakers in summer — not uncrowded, but a completely different crowd from international tourist circuits.
Best time
November to March (southern hemisphere summer)
Getting there
Domestic flights from Sao Paulo (1hr) or Rio (1.5hrs).
Tradeoffs
Relatively expensive by Brazilian standards in summer. English almost never spoken. Traffic between beaches in peak season can be severe.
