Fresh Air › Instead of Siem Reap
Kampot
Kampot sits on the Praek Tuek Chhu River in southern Cambodia. The town's pepper plantations produce what many chefs consider the finest pepper in the world. The colonial architecture along the riverfront is well-preserved. Above the town, the Bokor Hill Station — built by the French in 1921, abandoned, used by the Khmer Rouge, and now in various states of decay and restoration — is one of the more surreal destinations in Southeast Asia. Kep, the old French beach resort, is 25km away and worth an afternoon for the crab market alone.
Why visit
A river town famous for its pepper (Kampot pepper is the most celebrated in the world), excellent seafood, the Bokor Hill Station ruins, and Kep beach 25km away.
Crowd level
Permanently popular with long-term travellers and expats but never crowded in the Siem Reap sense.
Best time

Getting there
Bus from Phnom Penh (3hrs) or from the Vietnamese border.
Tradeoffs
