Kanazawa is what Kyoto might feel like if the algorithm hadn't found it yet. The city has a well-preserved samurai district, a geisha area, one of Japan's three great gardens, a serious food culture built around the Omicho market's fresh seafood, and strong craft traditions in lacquerware, gold leaf, and Kutani pottery. International visitor numbers are a fraction of Kyoto's. You can walk through the Higashi Chaya geisha district early in the morning and have it almost entirely to yourself.

Kenrokuen Garden, samurai and geisha districts, excellent seafood market, craft traditions, and strong cultural depth without Kyoto's visitor volume.

Noticeably less crowded than Kyoto. Some pressure around Kenrokuen Garden on weekends, but manageable.

Spring (April-May), autumn (October-November), or winter for snow scenery

Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo (2.5hrs). Compact city with good loop bus service.

Fewer major temple complexes than Kyoto. Less international restaurant variety. But far easier to enjoy at a human pace.
