Kyoto
Kyoto is still one of the most remarkable cities on earth. It has more UNESCO sites than most countries, a food culture that rivals Tokyo, and streetscapes that look more or less as they did two centuries ago. The problem is not Kyoto itself — it's the gap between the city's capacity and the volume of people Instagram and TikTok have directed toward it. On a busy autumn weekend, Fushimi Inari is less a walk through a sacred forest and more a slow shuffle through a corridor of camera phones. Arashiyama's bamboo grove takes about four minutes to walk through, surrounded by crowds, before depositing you into a gift shop. This does not mean you should skip Kyoto. It means you should time it carefully, or consider an alternative that offers most of the same things with less of the friction.
Crowd pressure
Most congested around Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, and Gion. Peak pressure during cherry blossom (late March-April) and autumn foliage (November). Tour bus congestion is year-round.
Why visit
Temples, gardens, traditional architecture, tea culture, craft, old streets, and the deepest concentration of cultural heritage in Japan.
Best window
Winter (December-February), or weekdays outside cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons
Getting there
Shinkansen from Tokyo (2.5hrs), Osaka (15min). City bus and subway network within Kyoto.
The honest version
Still extraordinary. The problem is everyone else noticed too. Managing the experience now requires careful timing and route planning.

Try
Kanazawa
Japan
Kanazawa offers the same core combination that draws people to Kyoto — historic districts, gardens, craft, food culture, and traditional architecture — with a fraction of the international visitor pressure. The Higashi Chaya geisha district, Kenrokuen Garden, and the samurai neighbourhoods provide a comparable depth of experience.

Try
Matsue
Japan
Matsue offers a genuine historic castle town with its own cultural identity — tea traditions, lake setting, original castle keep — without any of Kyoto's visitor pressure. A more remote but authentically rewarding alternative.

Try
Takayama
Japan
Takayama's Sanmachi Suji district offers a preserved historic merchant town streetscape with sake breweries, morning markets, and craft culture. Different character from Kyoto but similar appeal to travellers interested in traditional Japan.
