Chiang Mai Old City
Chiang Mai is genuinely one of Southeast Asia's great cities. The concentration of Lanna-period temples within the old city moat is extraordinary — some of the most beautiful temple architecture in Thailand exists within walking distance of the centre. The food scene is outstanding. The city is a sensible base for trekking, visiting hill tribe villages, and exploring northern Thailand. The problem is that the combination of digital nomad popularity, mass tourism, and its role as a major backpacker hub has created a commercialised zone around Nimman and the Night Bazaar that can obscure the actual city.
Crowd pressure
The old city moat area is heavily visited. The Night Bazaar, Sunday Walking Street, and Nimman area are crowded. Digital nomad population adds a particular kind of saturation to certain cafes and coworking spaces.
Why visit
Over 300 temples within the old city walls, strong Lanna cultural identity, excellent northern Thai food scene, and a good base for northern Thailand exploration.

November-February (cool season); avoid March-April smoke season
Getting there
Chiang Mai International Airport with direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore, and regional hubs. Songthaews and tuk-tuks within the city.
The honest version
Smoke season (March-April) can be severe. The digital nomad scene has created a specific commercial monoculture in some areas. Still a great city if you engage with its actual identity.
