Lisbon
Lisbon earned its popularity honestly. The architecture is remarkable, the light is extraordinary, the food and wine are excellent, and the city has a distinctive melancholy character built around fado music and the idea of saudade. The problem is that 'undiscovered gem' press coverage compounded for a decade has made it one of Europe's most visited cities while its infrastructure has not always kept pace. The historic tram routes are now primarily tourist attractions rather than functional transport. Central Alfama in August feels less like an neighbourhood and more like a walking tour with bars in it.
Crowd pressure
Alfama and Bairro Alto are saturated with tourists. The famous Tram 28 is now primarily a tourist ride queued for 45+ minutes. Airbnb pressure has transformed neighbourhood character significantly.
Why visit
Genuine architecture, fado, great wine and food, the river, and a light and pace that is genuinely distinct from northern European cities.
Best window
March-April or October-November to avoid peak summer crowds
Getting there
Well-connected international airport. Metro, tram (infamously crowded tourist lines), and bus within the city.
The honest version
Still a great city. Just not what it was before the travel media decided it was Europe's most liveable undiscovered city in 2015 and kept publishing that article annually.

Coimbra
Portugal
Coimbra gives you the things people love about Lisbon — architecture, fado, food, history, a distinctive Portuguese identity — at lower prices and with a fraction of the visitor numbers. The university and its legendary library add a dimension Lisbon cannot match.

Braga
Portugal
Braga offers exceptional Baroque religious architecture, a strong university energy, and northern Portuguese food culture at prices significantly lower than Lisbon. The Bom Jesus sanctuary staircase is one of Portugal's most extraordinary sights.
